Why We Use A Second Shooter

There are so many things to consider when booking a wedding photographer. One thing that has come up a lot in conversation with potential clients is whether or not we use a second shooter. Here’s our answer, and why we think it’s important!

“Do you have a second shooter that you work with?”

If I had a dollar for every time I’m asked about working with a second shooter, let’s just say I’d have a lot of dollars. And my answer is always the same. YES! Most couples are eager to make sure every detail of their wedding day is covered, and rightfully so! Planning a wedding is hard work. Photos of your big day are often the best way to remember how awesome it was. Second shooters are an extra set of eyes and ears on your day to make sure all details are captured.

“Will removing the second shooter cut any costs?”

For Hannah Michelle Photography, we won’t shoot a wedding solo. But we have reasons, and they’re super important.

When you’re alone, you can’t be in two places at once.

  • Most brides and grooms get ready separately, either in different rooms or different location entirely, and only having one photographer makes it almost logistically impossible to capture both “getting ready” processes. There are lots of other times during the day when things are happening simultaneously. We like to catch the bride walking down the aisle, but also want to get the groom’s face when he sees her. We spend a while shooting family photos and portraits after the wedding, but also want candids during cocktail hour. Being able to tag-team all of the different activities of the day allows us to provide more images for you!

With two photographers (that in our case, use the same gear), we have backups on backups on backups.

  • If something happened to one of our cameras, we have a way to help save us from the worst case scenario. Take comfort in knowing that if something happens to a piece of our gear, we’ve got more where that came from. It’s basically insurance for all parties involved!

Sometimes, we just need help.

  • I can’t tell you how many times I’ve asked my second shooter for help on wedding days. He’s there if I need him to hold a bouquet during portraits, or if I need help gathering family for family photos, or even if I just need to get a drink of water or use the bathroom. It’s also nice to have someone to keep me company on drives to weddings that aren’t close to home. He makes my job a thousand times easier, which makes your day a thousand times better, I promise!

Hopefully this gives you some insight into why we think it’s super important to have a second shooter at your wedding, and why we won’t shoot a wedding without one! For more frequently asked questions, visit our FAQ page!
